JAMMU AND KASHMIR PROBLEM -PAKISTAN HAS A LOT TO ANSWER . Brig Mahalingam

For some inexplicable reason, the discourse on Kashmir be it at the international platforms, human rights organisations or even amongst the Indian elites and intellectuals has more often than not centered around the Indian administered Kashmir. This is despite the fact the people of Gilgit – Baltistan (GB) do not have basic fundamental rights. The gravity can be gauged by the fact that on 28 May 1999, the Supreme Court of Pakistan had to order the Pakistan Government to guarantee ‘fundamental rights’ to the people of GB. Incidentally, GB constitutes 86 % of the total area (72,496 sq kms) of the Pakistan Occupied Kashmir, an integral part of India. Till date Pakistan has been hoodwinking the people by playing around with a few irrelevant measures with catchy nomenclatures of appointments calling them reforms. The world and the people of Kashmir have thus been kept in the dark and are unaware of the real status of the people of GB and the motives behind Pakistan’s doings.
It is time Pakistan is exposed and the people of Kashmir and the world are made aware of the real facts. With this in view, I have put down my views in an article titled ‘Gilgit – Baltistan experience: The true face of Pakistan’ published by the Centre for Land Warfare Studies (CLAWS). This may be viewed at the following link.
Regards,
Brigadier V Mahalingam (Retired)
